Casey Rorick, a high school student at Inland Lakes Schools, has been awarded the Youth Exchange and Study Abroad (YES Abroad) Scholarship, which covers a year of study in Thailand – equivalent to approximately $10,000. Casey was chosen to receive this prestigious award through AFS and PAX -Program of Academic Exchange, worldwide nonprofit high school student exchange organizations.
Inland Lakes High School will be graduating seventy-six seniors on May 31st at 2 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The commencement speaker this year is Kate Sackett Kelly. She is very familiar with Inland Lakes as a graduate and the daughter of Elementary Principal Carolyn Sackett. Kelly has followed in her mother’s professional footsteps and is an educator with Traverse City Public Schools.
Several textbooks are being proposed for purchase this year. As part of the JIC's (Joint Instructional Council) commitment to interested parents and community members these books will be available for review for 30 days. The following books are available to be reviewed:

'ASPIRE' for the reproductive part of the HS health class
Michigan State University has $1000 scholarships for students that will be attending MSU from Charlevoix, Emmet or Cheboygan County. Applicants must send in essay by May 15th; see Mrs. Jarema for essay requirement sheet.
The Inland Lakes Education Association has a scholarship for students pursuing a degree in education. See Mrs. Jarema for an application and turn completed applications in to Mrs. Jarema, Mrs. Bunker, or Mr. O’Bryant by May 8th.
The Inland Lakes Education Foundation is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year. As part of their commitment to furthering the education of past ILHS graduates, several $1000 scholarships are available to past graduates that want to start college or vocational school. The scholarships are also available to those that have already started such a program. These scholarships are based on the student being on track with their program of study and having financial need. Students are asked to furnish a copy of their college transcript and their financial aid package.&n
Inland Lakes High School mentoring program, which has 12 adult mentors and
12 students, tipped the tables at Cooperation Park. The school's mentoring
program encourages students and adults to be involved in the community and
participate in projects to improve the school or community. Last school
year the mentoring program helped clean the park and organized an animal
food drive for Cheboygan Humane Society. This year the program stained
tables at the park and is planning the same animal food drive May
Inland Lakes Fine Arts Program will host their annual Fine Arts show Friday April 24th in the Elementary Multi Purpose Room from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The show will not only display great pieces of artwork done by students but will also raise funds for the local food pantry that serves those in need. The funds will be raised through the purchase of empty bowls created by students as part of an ice cream social. Last year we raised $330! Help us raise more by coming to the art show and purchasing a bowl.
Inland Lakes High School seniors will have the opportunity to apply for 3 more scholarships each worth $1000. The school received official word from the American Red Cross on April 1st that Inland Lakes Student Council, Key Club, and National Honor Society blood drives collected 138 units of blood. The school's student organizations were able to exceed the American Red Cross goal of 128 units by ten.
The Inland Lakes Education Foundation will be giving eight $3000 scholarships to ILHS seniors that have proven their leadership skills. Two of these will go to students that have worked at Columbus Beach (or their parents have), one will go to a student affiliated with the I.R. Golf Club, one will go to a student going in to a technical science field, two will go to students going to vocational or trade school, and two will not have any restrictions.
